About Registered Massage Therapy & Acupuncture

Registered Massage Therapy:

Can a massage provide more benefit than simply relaxing at the spa? Indeed it can! Perhaps because registered massage therapy’s college is fairly new in New-Brunswick, people are often surprised at the range of issues a massage therapist can address within their scope of practice. The College of Massage Therapists of BC describes their scope of practice as follows: “massage therapy” means the health profession in which a person provides, for the purposes of developing, maintaining, rehabilitating or augmenting physical function, or relieving pain or promoting health, the services of

a. assessment of soft tissue and joints of the body, and

b. treatment and prevention of physical dysfunction, injury, pain and disorders of soft tissue and joints of the body by manipulation, mobilization and other manual methods.

A comprehensive list would be impossible to write down, but some common reasons to get a treatment from a massage therapist include: muscle tension, sprains/strains, tendonitis, neuropathy, plantar fasciitis, rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, sciatica, slipped disk, carpal tunnel syndrome, TMJ, frozen shoulder, golfers/tennis elbow, headaches & migraines, ligament tears, anxiety, depression, PTSD, post-mastectomy care, pre and post-natal care, pelvic pain…and the list goes on! To find out if massage therapy could help you, please do not hesitate to get in touch .

How massage and acupuncture can help:

Acupuncture:

Similarly to massage therapy, an acupuncturists scope of practice is wide ranging. The Traditional Chinese Medicine Act of 2006 describes the scope of practice as follows: “The practice of traditional Chinese medicine is the assessment of body system disorders through traditional Chinese medicine techniques and treatment using traditional Chinese medicine therapies to promote, maintain or restore health.”

The traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) techniques mentioned above can include needling, pulse and tongue diagnosis, electro-stimulation, moxibustion (heat therapy), cupping therapy, nutrition counselling, exercise prescription, and massage, to name a few.

Acupuncturists are trained to categorize a patient’s symptoms into a TCM diagnosis. It is a very holistic practice in that respect, as we do not treat your western diagnosis, but address the exact symptoms and the root cause of any particular condition. For example, 10 patients coming in with the same western medicine diagnosis of fibromyalgia, would likely all get 10 different acupuncture treatments, as they are tailored to the individual person.

Common reasons to visit an acupuncturist may include: muscle tensions, sprains and strains, headaches, digestive disorders, fertility issues, nerve pain, asthma, high blood pressure, stress and anxiety, depression, insomnia, constipation, to name but a few.

At Oceanside Acupuncture & Massage Therapy, Andre has a special interest in treating musculo-skeletal pain, but above all, helping patients overcome fertility challenges and pre-natal care.
